Summary Of Conferences

The residents, fellows, and faculty of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh participate in a series of weekly educational conferences at various institutions throughout the city of Pittsburgh. In addition, invited lectureships like the Musgrave Lecture enhance opportunities to hear and learn from distinguished leaders of the Plastic Surgery community.

Hand Surgery Review Conference - Weekly
Monday 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.

The first half of this weekly conference is devoted to review and discussion of assigned chapters in Essentials of Hand Surgery published by the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. The second half is used to discuss specific cases encountered in the emergency department, outpatient clinic, or operating room since the last conference. An informal, Socratic format is used with opportunities for residents to freely ask questions and exchange experience.

Core Curriculum Conference - Weekly
Monday 5:00 - 6:30 p.m.

The Core Curriculum Conference is a formal didactic teaching component of the plastic surgery resident's education. This conference consists of preparatory reading and discussion of assigned reading from the Selected Readings in Plastic Surgery. During a 12 months period, the entire scope of plastic surgery will be covered with the exception of Hand surgery and Craniofacial surgery which will be covered separately during their respective conferences.

Breast and Aesthetic Conference - Weekly
Monday 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. (2nd and 4th)

This is an interactive teaching conference for medical students, plastic surgery residents, fellows and faculty which intensively reviews the cases seen in the resident's cosmetic surgery clinic. The chief resident in charge of the clinic is responsible for presenting cases which he/she has seen in a digital video format. The resident then outlines an analysis of the patient's desires, pertinent physical examination findings and an operative plan. An in-depth discussion of each case is moderated by a faculty member and is supplemented with didactic teaching material provided by the resident and the specific aesthetic plastic surgery faculty.

Cleft-Craniofacial Conference - Bi-weekly
Monday 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. (1st, 3rd, and 5th)

The Cleft-Craniofacial Conference is an interactive teaching conference for medical students, residents, and fellows. The conference schedule is designed to comprehensively cover the core topics of cleft and craniofacial surgery over a one year cycle. Conference style will include a combination of lectures and occasional case presentations, with active attendance participation. Residents will be provided with a three-ring binder and pre-conference handouts to read and prepare.

Plastic Surgery Journal Club - Monthly
Fourth Tuesday of each month, 7:00 -9:30 p.m.

Journal club will be held the last Wednesday of each month. A different attending will be appointed as discussant for each month. This attending will assign three articles to read based on the timeliness, scientific impact, or landmark nature of the articles. These articles will be discussed over dinner by residents and faculty in attendance. This conference, like weekly grand rounds, is widely attended by many community plastic surgeons and clinical faculty, and thus provides an excellent opportunity to learn from dialogue between very experienced surgeons. It also provides a congenial setting for discussion, questions, and answers.

Plastic Surgery Grand Rounds (weekly)
Wednesday 7:00 - 9:00 a.m.

The city-wide plastic surgery grand rounds are attended by all university and volunteer faculty, as well as plastic and general surgery residents, students, research and clinical fellows, and nursing staff. A didactic lecture is given in the first hour by a faculty member or invited speakers from interrelated specialties, covering all topics in the diverse curriculum of plastic surgery. The second half of the grand rounds consists of case presentations by residents and free discussion among all participants. Morbidity conference is held monthly in the same format. An integral part of the long tradition of Pittsburgh Plastic Surgery, the Wednesday grand rounds are the anchor of the resident educational program.

Combined Orthopedic/Plastic Surgery Hand Conference - Weekly
Friday 6:30-7:30 a.m.

Attended by faculty, fellows, and residents from the orthopedic and plastic surgery services, this weekly conference uses a case-oriented format for teaching. Typically three cases will be presented by hand fellows or residents, followed by a brief prepared Powerpoint review of the topic. A structured discussion is then conducted on the pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, operation, and rehabilitation for the condition.

Anatomic Dissection of Cadavers - Monthly
First Saturday of each month, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

A series of formal cadaver dissections will include the following topics: hand and forearm - volar aspect, hand and forearm - dorsal aspect, anterior trunk, posterior trunk, face - brow and orbit, face - midface and lowerface, neck, nose, thigh, lower leg, and foot. Dissections will proceed in an organized, planned manner, with one faculty member and one resident/fellow to be assigned to organizing each dissection. Most dissections will require prosection or partial dissection to be accomplished prior to the Saturday morning meeting in order to present the anatomy in an efficient manner. All dissections shall incorporate clinical correlations in the description of the anatomy. It is encouraged that the key or challenging portions of surgical procedures are explained through the use of the dissected cadavers. Additional dissections or practice of surgical procedures outside the formal curriculum are encouraged and should be well-publicized, so that most residents can take part in the educational experience.

In addition to the core plastic surgery programs, we have several fellowship programs: A Craniofacial Fellowship and a Hand Fellowship, the VA Fellowship and the Mercy (microsurgery) Fellowship.
