Research Opportunities for High School
Students (ROHSS)
The laboratory
director, Dr. Kacey Marra, is interested in providing opportunities
for high school students in western Pennsylvania to shadow our
researchers. This program results in increasing awareness of
biomedical research to high school students. It is our hope
that these students, particularly female students, become aware
of the opportunities available in science and engineering.
Our program began in 2003. The first student to spend time in our lab was Dana Kosek, a sophomore at Chartiers-Houston High School in a suburb south of Pittsburgh. In 2004, Latoya Lewis (a senior at Allderdice High School) and participated in ROHSS. In 2005, we had three participants: Lekha Tummalapall, Harina Vin, and Hemali Vin. In 2006, we invited 3 high school students to visit our lab, hear about our research, and participate in experiments. They were Dana Kosek, Stevie MacDonald and Katie Lefkowitz.
